Summing Up 2.5 Years: How the “War Trauma Rehabilitation” Initiative is Transforming Ukraine’s Rehabilitation System

Today we gathered with our partners to summarize the results of our joint work over 2.5 years. Our initiative «Rehabilitation of War Traumas» was launched by the Charitable Foundation «Patients of Ukraine» with the support of the Embassy of Switzerland in the third month of the full-scale invasion.

Purchase of rehabilitation equipment and aids

We are developing a rehabilitation network across the country — both at the regional and community levels, so that every person can receive assistance close to their home. One of the ways to develop the network is the purchase of rehabilitation equipment for medical institutions. The project included 28 offline and 16 online events, in which 17 multidisciplinary teams and over 190 specialists participated.

Development and change of policy

We will use all the experience and knowledge gained to change the policy in the field of rehabilitation, and thus make the system sustainable and more patient-friendly. We are actively working on the development of the necessary legislation for the successful functioning of the rehabilitation system in Ukraine.

With our partners in particular:

  • Prepared more than 60 regulatory legal acts, of which 40 have already been adopted.
  • Developed a roadmap for the development of integrated child care, recommendations for improving legislation and harmonizing policies of different levels of government to create a cellular rehabilitation system.
  • Created a rehabilitation functional based on the ICF.
  • Conducted an analysis of legislation and prepared a report on rehabilitation policy in Ukraine.

Support of care

Our experts provide coordination support to individual cases, helping military personnel with severe injuries to receive the best treatment and rehabilitation. They guide the needs in specialized institutions, help with housing and finding a job after rehabilitation.
In addition, as part of the initiative of therapists of the Ukrainian Society of Speech and Language Therapy, 2,590 therapy sessions were conducted for 24 veterans with craniocerebral injuries.

Awareness raising

To develop the rehabilitation sector, public awareness of the importance of a systemic approach and evidence-based rehabilitation is being raised.
The communication campaign reached over 2 million people through social networks and over 14 million through the media, contributing to the formation of an understanding of the importance of quality rehabilitation.
